Devotion 010205

January 2, 2005

As we come to worship together today, we will be celebrating Christ and worshipping at the Lord’s Table. Partaking of the Lord’s Table is such a privilege and an honor. It is a time for us to worship Christ for what He has done.

I Corinthians 11:23-28 says,

“For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”

I had a professor in seminary who challenged his students to look at three significant aspect of the Lord’s Table.

  1. Past Aspect: We commemorate what Christ has done for us. As we look back and reflect on what Christ has done for us, allowing His blood to be shed and His body to be broken, we fall more and more in love with Him.
  2. Present Aspect: We celebrate, proclaim, and examine. When we come to the Lord’s Table we come with reverence. Scripture teaches us that we should come to the table in a worthy manner. We should use this time to examine our hearts and lives and make sure that there is nothing there that is keeping us from being intimate with Christ.
  3. Future Aspect: We come to the Lord’s Table expecting! One author wrote, “In the remembrance of Christ in the Lord’s Supper, there is not only a looking back at the sacrifice of Calvary and a fellowship with His risen person, but there is also a forward look in anticipation of His return.” We are taught here that we should continue to partake in this ordinance until Christ comes again.

As you reflect on the Lord’s Table take a few moments to praise God for what He has done, what He is doing, and what He is going to do…
